Nissan NV200 recalled over wiring harness

January 10th, 2014

2013 Nissan NV200

The Nissan NV200, the van that’s meant to act as the backbone of the New York City taxi fleet, is being recalled. Compared to some of the recalls we’ve seen this year, the 2,529 NV200s needing repairs is not a particularly huge deal – but try telling that to their inconvenienced owners and drivers.

The recall affects NVs built between February 6, 2013, and August 2, 2013. The vans in question use a wiring harness near the battery that may wear through its protective covering, causing a short. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if a short occurs, it can cause a blown fuse which will stop the fuel pump and in turn, the engine.

Nissan will be notifying owners and aims to start recall repairs by mid-December. Scroll down for the full bulletin from the NHTSA.

Mercedes V-Class vans might be coming to America

January 10th, 2014

Mercedes V-Class interior

A few weeks ago, Mercedes revealed interior images of its upcoming V-Class, a new van set to take the place of several models. Now the latest news suggests that the V-Class could make its way Stateside.

Based on a new rear-wheel-drive platform, the new V-Class would slot in below the Sprinter that has made so much headway in the North American market. A luxury version would be marketed to customers who might otherwise be looking at a Chrysler Town & Country or Toyota Sienna, while the Vito version would be more utilitarian to target the Nissan NV200 and Ford Transit (but larger than the Transit Connect, which is closer in size to the European-market Citan).

With a rear-drive platform and four- and six-cylinder engine options, the V-Class would offer a compelling alternative to the front-wheel-drive competition. And with premium accoutrements like a panoramic glass sunroof and wood trim, the V-Class could make a reasonable replacement for the departing R-Class.

Chrysler patents smarter minivan folding seats

January 10th, 2014

Chrysler's patent application for a new seat-stowing mechanism

It’s frightening to think of how quickly the mice would have overtaken us if we hadn’t stayed one step ahead of them with better mousetraps. We’ll never have to worry about that in our relentlessly re-engineered world, though. Case in point: Chrysler has been granted a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office for an improved design of the already wondrous Stow ‘n’ Go seating found in the automaker’s Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans.

Introduced in 2005, the Stow ‘n’ Go was improved in 2008, and based on the drawings of this third-generation improvement, the new design appears to allow stowage of the second row of seats without having to move the front-row seats forward as much. It look like it also involves fewer operations and moving parts, with a portion of the seatback being incorporated into the flat floor when the seats are stowed, as opposed to having a completely separate cover.

It’s possible that the innovation may appear on the next-generation minivans expected in 2015, but Chrysler isn’t commenting on the patent.

Ford will build Hackmobile out of Transit Connect Wagon

January 10th, 2014

A rendering of the Hackmobile, a mobile fabrication shop in a Ford Transit Connect

What you see in the above image is a rendering of the Hackmobile Transit Connect Wagon. What is that? It’s a “mobile fabrication and hacking unit” that includes tools for metal- and woodworking, 3D and electronics fabrication, a three-axis CNC machine called “The Fabber,” a video projector and screen, an air compressor, an 84×48-inch work surface that folds out like a Murphy bed and oh so much more. When not in use, all of the implements fold neatly into the back of Ford’s award-winning van.

But perhaps the more important question is why is that? Because Make Magazine held an Ultimate Maker Vehicle Challenge in conjunction with Ford in which ten teams were charged with creating “the ultimate Ford Transit Connect Wagon for the do-it-yourself enthusiast.” Team Twin Cities Maker won the competition with the Hackmobile, and in addition to winning $10,000, Ford has declared it’s actually going to build the thing – which is great, because if they can actually engineer a road-legal Hackmobile Transit Connect Wagon as envisioned, the inevitable A-Team movie reboot might need to think about including it.

Check out the video below for a cheeky walk-through of the Hackmobile, and get all the particulars in the press release below that.

Hyundai recalling 15,500 Entourage minivans over rust in cold-weather states

January 9th, 2014

2007 Hyundai Entourage

Hyundai has increased its quality by leaps and bounds in recent years, but we’re not sure the Entourage minivan is the best representation of the brand. Essentially a rebadged version of the Kia Sedona, the Entourage has been out of production for about five years now, and it’s evidently run into some trouble.

The problem apparently revolves around the suspension – specifically the front lower control arm – which could rust and fracture, particularly in snow-belt states. As a result, Hyundai and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for the Entourage from the 2007 and 2008 model years, the only two years it was sold in the United States.

The recall applies to some 15,500 units sold or registered in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Hyundai will notify owners as to when they should bring their vehicles in for inspection before either rustproofing or replacing the components in question. What’s interesting, however, is that the nearly identical Kia Sedona has not been subject to the same recall.

Subaru Levorg Concept has us dreaming about a Legacy wagon

January 9th, 2014

Subaru Levorg Concept

We’re not sure what got in the water supply of Subaru’s Tokyo Motor Show team, but we like the results. After checking out the Cross Sport Design Concept, which we would love to see as a BRZ shooting brake, Subaru took the wraps off its Levorg Concept. Naming convention aside, the idea of a sport-tuned wagon with a boxer engine is music to our ears.

The design language fits in with recent Subaru products, and the Levorg’s face is very similar to the 2015 WRX that was just unveiled across the Pacific Ocean at the LA Auto Show. In terms of its size, though, this concept is roughly the same as the current Outback, only it sits about five inches lower. Power comes from either of a pair of boxer engines: a fuel-efficient 1.6-liter or a 296-horsepower, 2.0-liter. Both engines would be paired to Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

Subaru says that the Levorg is a thinly veiled version of the production sports tourer that will go on sale (likely in Japan and/or Europe) next spring. Could this mean we could soon see a sporty Legacy wagon in the US? We can only hope. More details about the Levorg are posted in the press release found below.
