Mitsubishi AR Concept continues a wacky, wonderful tradition [w/video]

January 26th, 2014

Mitsubishi Concept AR debut at 2013 Tokyo Motor Show

Mitsubishi enjoys a long history of thinking outside the literal box when it comes to designing minivans and people movers. Remember the Mitsubishi Van, a.k.a. Delica? How about the Chariot, better known to us as the Colt Vista? The Expo and Expo LRV, the twin models that succeeded it? These were all left-of-center takes on the MPV genre, and while they never sold in large volumes, we can’t help but look back at them with a mix of bemusement and respect for their oddball character. Who knows? A production version of this AR Concept could be next.

According to Mitsubishi, “the comfort of a minivan and active personality of an SUV are merged at the highest levels” in the Concept AR. Us? We just think this mild hybrid concept looks kind of neat, even if it’s only putting on off-road airs with its elevated ride hight, faux skid plates and black-lipped wheel wells.

Hardware-wise, this Active Runabout is less showcar and more ‘real world,’ with the front wheels drawing their power from a 134-horsepower, 1.1-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with a 10-kW electric motor used as a belt starter generator (read: mild hybrid). A continuously variable transmission handles shifting duties.

At just over 171 inches long (a couple inches shorter than a Ford C-Max Hybrid), the AR Concept seats up to six people, with a reconfigurable passenger space accessed through conventional front-hinged doors offering second-row seating that can rotate to face the third row. It also features a whole host of connected car technology that includes a smartphone-sized touchscreen in the steering wheel.

Scroll down to see a video short of the Concept AR in action, along with the official press release.

Subaru Levorg Concept has us dreaming about a Legacy wagon

January 25th, 2014

Subaru Levorg Concept

We’re not sure what got in the water supply of Subaru’s Tokyo Motor Show team, but we like the results. After checking out the Cross Sport Design Concept, which we would love to see as a BRZ shooting brake, Subaru took the wraps off its Levorg Concept. Naming convention aside, the idea of a sport-tuned wagon with a boxer engine is music to our ears.

The design language fits in with recent Subaru products, and the Levorg’s face is very similar to the 2015 WRX that was just unveiled across the Pacific Ocean at the LA Auto Show. In terms of its size, though, this concept is roughly the same as the current Outback, only it sits about five inches lower. Power comes from either of a pair of boxer engines: a fuel-efficient 1.6-liter or a 296-horsepower, 2.0-liter. Both engines would be paired to Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

Subaru says that the Levorg is a thinly veiled version of the production sports tourer that will go on sale (likely in Japan and/or Europe) next spring. Could this mean we could soon see a sporty Legacy wagon in the US? We can only hope. More details about the Levorg are posted in the press release found below.

Minivans and hybrids shopped by men and women equally

January 25th, 2014

seller and a couple in the...

Men love fast, exotic cars, and women want something safe and practical – at least that is the way conventional thinking goes. But a new study challenges these old beliefs. According to the auto information aggregators at iSeeCars, both sexes shop for minivans and hybrids equally.

The study also dug deeper into the different browsing habits between genders. For instance, women are twice as likely to shop for Kia and 67 percent more likely to shop for Hyundai. Men are seven percent more likely to buy American cars. Both sexes shop the German brands equally.

It seems that men might be slightly greener in their shopping because they are twice as likely to browse electric cars and two and a half times more likely to look at diesels.

Still, the old stereotype of men wanting a more performance-oriented car is not entirely false. They also are more likely to look at cars that cost over $45,000, and men are still more likely to buy a sports car.

“Men like fast, flashy cars. They are performance oriented, even if they have to shell out more money,” Phong Ly, cofounder and CEO of iSeeCars, said in an interview with CBS MoneyWatch. “Women are looking for the best value.”

The iSeeCars study got its data directly from dealers and online sellers like eBay Motors, then determined sex based on first name and excluded gender-neutral names. What it shows is that even if men might like browsing for fast cars, practicality and economy win out in the end. It’s still fun to look, though.

2014 Ford Transit Connect configurator fires up for the whole family

January 24th, 2014

2014 Ford Transit Connect

The second-generation Ford Transit Connect is almost upon us, and to get work- and family-oriented customers ready for the new model, Ford has launched a configurator for both van and wagon versions. Both body styles will go on sale early next year with the base TC Van starting at $22,000, but customers wanting side windows and rear seats will have to pony up at least an extra $3,000 for the TC Wagon.

Ford is definitely looking to get back into the family van business with the 2014 TC Wagon offering three available trim levels, two engines and the choice between five- and seven-passenger seating (with two wheelbases). Like many recent Ford products, a fancy Titanium trim level is offered, and opting for it will cost you – this trim starts at $29,000, and we were able to spec it out with a panoramic roof, tow package and front and rear parking sensors for a little over $33,000.

Businesses looking for a small, fuel-efficient work vehicle now get more options on the TC Van like the choice of split, hinged rear doors or a liftgate (with or without glass), a long wheelbase ($1,000) and Ford’s CrewChief vehicle tracking system ($925). Fully loaded, this van is still costs less than the fullsize E-Series. On both Van and Wagon, the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine is a $795 option, but it is only offered on short-wheelbase models and Ford has yet to release power or fuel economy specs yet. With the standard 2.5-liter engine, the TC will get up to 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Wagon Attack’s crappy Civic Wagon meets its end in Iceland

January 24th, 2014

Wagon Attack III

Several years ago, we posted a video on a dumpy, all-wheel-drive, turbocharged Honda Civic Wagon that starred in a film called Wagon Attack II. The video showed the rusty, red five-door tackling terrain that no Civic has any business driving on, and doing it with flair and style.

Now, the team that produced the original video are back, with Wagon Attack III. The latest video is packed full of goodness for wagon lovers of any stripe. Where the last video saw the turbocharged wagon in Michigan, though, this time it’s been shipped to Iceland, where it’s flung about on the beaches and dirt roads of the volcanic island.

The video has a bit of a sad ending, though. You’ll need to watch it and see what we mean. We’ve got the entire video down below. Take a look.
