2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Editor’s Note: Our reporter was anxious to get some time behind the wheel of the XF Sportbrake, even though Jaguar only had a very small window available for us to drive it. As a result, we weren’t able to capture our usual original images to go with the Quick Spin story. Please accept our regrets, and Jag’s lovely stock photography, instead.

The last wagon attempt from Jaguar was the X-Type, built between 2003 and that model line’s unceremonious end in 2009. That X-Type and its legacy represent a real dog of a chapter for Jaguar, and for the Halewood factory where the barker was built. It was the final joke told prior to the brand’s proper rebirth phase – a phase we’re enjoying the heck out of today.

Current magnanimous Jaguar owner Tata can be thanked for this new wagon, the XF Sportbrake. Like all newness coming from Jag these days, this new wagon also feels lightyears more serious an offering, ready to compete squarely with established premium wagon makers across Europe. A Jaguar wagon in America is a far-off priority for the company, frankly. Still we deserve to know what we’re missing for the time being from this (sometimes overly) cherished British firm.

I was given a right-hand-drive 3.0-liter turbodiesel XF Sportbrake. Jaguar currently offers only diesel powerplants in the wagon due to the European market buying nearly 100 percent of its wagon bodies with the far more efficient powerplants. And on the 40 miles from Welshpool over to Bala at the edge of Wales’ Snowdonia National Park, there’s some driving to be done.

Driving Notes
  • The very good folks of Jaguar’s UK offices met me in the middle of just about nowhere for this special, short, but sweet drive cross the mossy hills. I hadn’t yet been able to drive a Jaguar XF Sportbrake – a car that sort of came in announced softly and with zero fanfare – but where better to do this than here on its home turf?
  • What’s best about the Jag wagon is that it remains an inherently classy rarity, but thankfully this time Jaguar has really done its legwork. As with the distinctive feel of the big XJ sedan, this XF wagon is completely Jaguar-esque and not easily likened to others.
  • The sweetest surprise was exactly how much fun it was to drive, thundering over hill and dale in a land of seemingly no traffic. This 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 is Euro-wag paradise and I was soon chucking it around as though it weighed 500 pounds less, and had one fewer rows of seats.
  • Granted, with this big motor I also got the eight-speed automatic. But there’s nothing sluggish about this combo on a family hauler capable of hitting 60 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds or less. It certainly felt like less; the throttle response was really good.
  • There is up to 59.2 cubic feet of cargo space available when obeying all regulations to keep the windows clear for visibility. Load the XF Sportbrake like a college kid might, and who knows the true volume in this gaping space. With the seats in place, five adults have plenty of headroom and enough legroom.
  • The standard 20-inch wheels aboard my diesel S model transmitted surprisingly little road noise into the ample cabin, and same can be said for the two large-mouth exhaust tips. Fiddling with the Jaguar Drive Control via the rheostat selector is as easy as ever, even though I am not in love with the gratuitous spectacle of said selector rising up out of the “stage” every time I ignite the engine. Feels a tad 1970s to me.
  • I was slightly wrapped up in the drive and unaware of exactly how spirited it may have been, until the Jaguar PR maestro with me said, “Well, I can sort of tell that you’re enjoying yourself.” I truly was, like rarely before in the more civilian trim Jags.
  • Doing all of this and getting a return of something like 35 miles per gallon on average got me starting in on that old whine: “Why can’t we get this brilliant sporty highway cruiser/hauler in the States?” It may be a wee bit too Euro, I understand, but this sophisticated low-revving style of sporting practicality, with a handsome exterior, suits me very well.

As of right now, the XF Sportbrake is exclusively for European sale, hence the current two-engine diesel range. For the North American market, the next big push after the F-Type convertible and coupe (the latter based on the ultra-sexy C-X16 concept car) is the crossover/SUV, reportedly due out in 2016.

2012 Volkswagen Golf

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

The pioneer in hot hatchbacks – the Volkswagen Golf – is back with some new engine and model versions for 2012. Although many rival automotive brands have caught up with the Golf in terms of popularity, sales and technological advancement over the years, the VW Golf’s reputation alone still gives it a notch of an advantage over its counterparts with regards to buyer preference particularly in the European market. The 2012 version of the VW Golf is now available for sale in the UK as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback with 5 distinct models but with the same core values- fun to drive, solidly built and competitively priced.

Without further ado, here are the five 2012 Golf models and its respective trims and base prices which are as follows: The entry level Golf starting at £15,850 up to £21,310 with 4 trims namely the S, the Match, the Blue Motion and the GT. For those who love the sun and driving with the roof down, there’s the all-new Golf Cabriolet model which is only sold as a 2-door version with 3 trims starting with the S at £20,720, the SE for £22,455, and the GT for £25,295.

The Golf Plus is a roomy version of the entry level model and comes available with 5 doors in 2 variants with the S at £15,780 and the SE at £19,370. For those who like more room for the family, there’s the Golf Estate with three trims starting with the S (£17,960), the SE (£20,095), and the Sportline (£21,965).

And last but certainly not the least among them, the world renowned Golf GTI model which is favored by car reviewers and enthusiasts alike. This is the most powerful and sporty version and comes in four trims namely the GTD (£24,635), the GTI (£25,305), the GTI Edition 35 (£27,525), and the top of the model line Golf R (£31,420).

With the exception of the Golf Blue Motion trim which is powered solely by a fuel efficient 1.6L 105hp turbo-diesel engine, any other Golf model can be had in three variants of the 5-cylinder petrol engines (two 1.2L with 85hp and 105hp; and a 1.4L with 122hp) and four variants of the 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines (two 1.6TDi with 90hp and 105hp; a 1.6L Blue Motion Technology with 105hp; and a 2.0TDi 140hp). A standard five or six-speed manual gearbox transfers power to the front wheels although an optional six or seven-speed automatic transmission is also available.

Even though the 2012 VW Golf is deemed a tad expensive compared to other cars in its class, its long list of standard amenities, safety features and overall fun factor will do justice to its asking price. Nothing else out there can compare to the 35 years of constant evolution by the VW Golf, testament to the company’s pursuit of delivering to the consumers a vehicle with a fun to drive dynamics in an overall quality package.

Honda Civic Tourer Concept shows the shape of European things to come [w/video]

Honda Civic Tourer Concept - front three-quarter view, Geneva Motor Show premiere

Honda will be expanding its European Civic range this year, and our first glimpse at the shape of things to come arrives in the form of this Tourer Concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. According to Honda, this swoopy concept provides a look at the upcoming Civic Tourer production model, which is set to be revealed in Frankfurt this September.

The Tourer Concept very obviously builds on the design groundwork set by the latest Civic hatchback when it first debuted in 2011. That means there are sharp, angular elements found up front and a sloping roofline that rakes down at the rear. Combine that with the large, concept-spec wheels and the funky front lighting elements, and what we have here is a really attractive little wagon – something that will no doubt battle the new Toyota Auris Touring Sports and Volkswagen Golf Variant that are also making their debut here in Switzerland.

It goes without saying, but don’t expect to see this Euro Civic show up in the United States anytime soon. After all, we have the “there, I fixed it” 2013 sedan and coupe to keep us happy. Scroll down for all of the wagony details, including a video.

Is there any harm in buying blanking plates to block off the ports where the EGR Valve sits? Some of the 3.8′s out there don’t have an EGR valve and the county I live in doesn’t require emissions testing. By simply blocking off the engine side of the valve and the top side of the hose using…

2014 Honda Odyssey set to clean up in NY with world’s first in-car vacuum

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

2014 Honda Odyssey - front three-quarter view, blue

Much of the minivan segment’s volume has been sucked up by the industry’s ever-increasing appetite for crossovers, but a few major players are hanging in there, eager to serve as beasts of burden for America’s families. Chief among those players is Honda, which is showing its revamped 2014 Odyssey at this week’s New York Auto Show with a potential game-changing feature – an in-car vacuum.

2014 Honda Odyssey - new HondaVAC in-car vacuumCo-developed with Shop-Vac, the HondaVAC system will come standard on the range-topping Touring Elite model. The system includes a replaceable filter and canister bag, along with a range of attachments located in the cargo hold. Honda says this first-ever feature includes a hose that is long enough to clean the entire interior. Better still, the vacuum will run for up to eight minutes after the vehicle is turned off, so you can get every last Cheerio out of the seat cushions, and it never needs plugging in or recharging, as it runs off of the vehicle’s electrical system.

In other news, the 2014 Odyssey gets a new aluminum hood and fenders to pair with its revamped grille and lower fascia. Headlamps get a more sinister look thanks to darker surrounds, and there are new LED taillamps out back, as well as revamped side mirrors on the doors. Underneath the skin, Honda says the 2014 Odyssey has received structural changes to help it ace the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety’s new small-overlap frontal crash test, and it’s also added active safety features like lane departure warning and forward collision warning to the optional features list.

Honda has chosen to make no mention of any drivetrain innovations, so we assume it will continue to be motivated by a 248-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 powering the front wheels.

Inside, existing Odyssey owners will note a revamped center stack and new trim finishes, along with available new features including pushbutton start, HondaLink cloud-based infotainment options with smartphone integration, HD radio and so on.

Us? We just want to go spill some things and try out that vacuum. In the meantime, sit tight, kids – we’ll have live photos of the new Odyssey from its New York debut before you can finish sucking down that sippy cup.

Mini Clubvan ready for boutique chic delivery duty from $25,985

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

The light commercial vehicle market has exploded in recent years. With a too-large full-size van no longer the only option for small businesses looking for an enclosed cargo carrier, options like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit Connect and now this, the Mini Clubvan, are now available to suit every size need.

Unveiled at last year’s Geneva Motor Show
, the Clubvan will soon be on sale here in the US and we finally have details about what that transaction will cost you. Motoring File reports that the Clubvan’s price will be $25,985, which includes the so-called “chicken tax” and a $700 destination and handling charge.

Other questions that were answered include whether or not the Clubvan can be ordered as a Cooper S or even John Cooper Works model, and the answer is no (why do need to deliver cakes that fast anyway?). Also, Mini has confirmed you can’t take the shortcut of creating your own Clubvan by purchasing a standard Clubman and removing the rear seats. The factory Clubvan features steel side panels instead of vinyl coverings over the rear windows, as well as a fully flat load floor and a safety cage protecting front seat occupants.

The Clubvan’s price slots in just above the $25,100 Clubman Cooper S model (a standard Clubman starts at $21,400). It has a payload capacity of 1,102 pounds and will consume about 30.37 cubic-feet of stuff in its cargo area, which features six attachment loops and is fitted with 12-volt sockets. The Clubvan, of course, also features the Clubman’s unique arrangement of five doors that includes a mini front-hinged door behind the front passenger’s door, and two side-hinged vertical doors in the rear.

Nissan NV200 finds new work as ambulance, Gibson guitar repair truck

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

Gibson NV200 Mobile Repair & Restoration Van

We live in a world now where not every police cruiser and taxi is a Ford Crown Victoria, not every executive car is a Lincoln Town Car and not every ambulance is based on a Ford Econoline van. Vehicles like the new Nissan NV200 are making inroads into the service, livery and emergency vehicle markets, and we’ve got a couple cases in point to share.

The first one is a fleet of 30 new ambulances based on the heavier-duty NV2500 chassis. They are entering the Mexican Red Cross fleet of emergency vehicles this year after performing well in pilot tests last year. The Mexican Red Cross says it receives 1,200,000 ambulance service requests per year, so the mettle of these new machines will be tested in a hurry.

The second example is less useful for life-saving, but may save a guitar from going to the scrap heap. Called the Gibson NV200 Mobile Repair & Restoration Van, it can take the services of an authorized Gibson rep anywhere they’re needed to repair or restore an axe in need. The van features a whole aesthetic designed to evoke the classic Gibson look, with wood veneer and shades of brown and black used throughout. There’s a guitar rack that holds four instruments, a sliding 56-inch long repair table, toolbox, genuine Gibson stools and a sound system by Gibson Pro Audio.

The Gibson van will debut this week at the New York Auto Show, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see more collaborations like this between these two companies in the future, as they’re both local to Tennessee. Feel free to learn more in the press release down below.

Bertone Jet 2+2 is a family-style Aston Martin Rapide

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Bertone Jet 2+2 - front three-quarter view, Geneva Motor Show premiere

Leave it to Bertone to take a stab at improving the look of the Aston Martin Rapide. The coachbuilder may have done just that with its Jet 2+2 shooting brake unveiled here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Using the sexy Aston four-door as a basis, the coachbuilder worked the Aston’s rear quarters and lifted the roof into a proper hatch, resulting in a machine with plenty of cargo space out back (though rear seat room doesn’t appear to be much better than the production sedan). An LED span joins the vehicle’s two taillights, and the design looks far more cohesive than the original renderings led us to believe.

An unnamed collector commissioned the one-off build, and Bertone is using the longroof to mark the 60th anniversary of the company’s first partnership with Aston Martin. We couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate the date. The stock 6.0-liter V12 remains unsullied, cranking out 476 horsepower, though Bertone has given the interior a once-over with unique wood, glazed aluminum and two leather colors specified by the individual who commissioned the car. Check out the full press release below for more information.

Volkswagen e-Co-Motion concept poised for delivery to Geneva

Friday, March 29th, 2013

With Nissan getting ready to launch the e-NV200, it appears Volkswagen is looking to go after the same zero-emission commercial vehicle market with the all-electric 2013 e-Co-Motion Concept. Debuting next week at the Geneva Motor Show, the e-Co-Motion Concept might be small in size, but VW says it has cargo and payload capacities that should be perfect for small businesses.

Measuring 179 inches long, 75 inches wide and 77 inches tall, the e-Co-Motion Concept has about the same footprint as the current Golf, and it has a cargo capacity of 162 cubic feet and a maximum payload of more than 1,700 pounds. There isn’t too much information on the e-Co-Motion just yet – such as what electric components and platform are used – but the press release posted below states while the concept is shown as a cargo van, future body styles could include a passenger wagon or a refrigerated box van.
