2012 Volkswagen Golf

Monday, December 31st, 2012

The pioneer in hot hatchbacks – the Volkswagen Golf – is back with some new engine and model versions for 2012. Although many rival automotive brands have caught up with the Golf in terms of popularity, sales and technological advancement over the years, the VW Golf’s reputation alone still gives it a notch of an advantage over its counterparts with regards to buyer preference particularly in the European market. The 2012 version of the VW Golf is now available for sale in the UK as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback with 5 distinct models but with the same core values- fun to drive, solidly built and competitively priced.

Without further ado, here are the five 2012 Golf models and its respective trims and base prices which are as follows: The entry level Golf starting at £15,850 up to £21,310 with 4 trims namely the S, the Match, the Blue Motion and the GT. For those who love the sun and driving with the roof down, there’s the all-new Golf Cabriolet model which is only sold as a 2-door version with 3 trims starting with the S at £20,720, the SE for £22,455, and the GT for £25,295.

The Golf Plus is a roomy version of the entry level model and comes available with 5 doors in 2 variants with the S at £15,780 and the SE at £19,370. For those who like more room for the family, there’s the Golf Estate with three trims starting with the S (£17,960), the SE (£20,095), and the Sportline (£21,965).

And last but certainly not the least among them, the world renowned Golf GTI model which is favored by car reviewers and enthusiasts alike. This is the most powerful and sporty version and comes in four trims namely the GTD (£24,635), the GTI (£25,305), the GTI Edition 35 (£27,525), and the top of the model line Golf R (£31,420).

With the exception of the Golf Blue Motion trim which is powered solely by a fuel efficient 1.6L 105hp turbo-diesel engine, any other Golf model can be had in three variants of the 5-cylinder petrol engines (two 1.2L with 85hp and 105hp; and a 1.4L with 122hp) and four variants of the 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines (two 1.6TDi with 90hp and 105hp; a 1.6L Blue Motion Technology with 105hp; and a 2.0TDi 140hp). A standard five or six-speed manual gearbox transfers power to the front wheels although an optional six or seven-speed automatic transmission is also available.

Even though the 2012 VW Golf is deemed a tad expensive compared to other cars in its class, its long list of standard amenities, safety features and overall fun factor will do justice to its asking price. Nothing else out there can compare to the 35 years of constant evolution by the VW Golf, testament to the company’s pursuit of delivering to the consumers a vehicle with a fun to drive dynamics in an overall quality package.

2012 Vauxhall Astra

Monday, December 31st, 2012

Vauxhall, an automotive division of General Motors, has recently released for 2012 their newly redesigned Astra model lineup. It is being offered as a 5-door hatchback to compete in the suddenly crowded European compact vehicle category with the UK as its primary target market. There will be a variety of new revolutionary petrol and diesel engines made available to power the Astra starting with three ECOTEC petrol engines– two different specs of 1.4i inline-4 with outputs of 87hp and 100hp, and a 1.6i producing a modest 115hp.

The ECOTEC diesel engines on the other hand will come in two all-new inline-4 specifications with common rail multi-injection and variable geometry turbocharger: a 4-cylinder 1.4i producing 140hp and the proven 1.6i with a 180 horsepower rating. As if those are not enough, Vauxhall has also introduced their lineup of all-new ecoFLEX diesel units: a 1.3CDTi engine good for 95hp, a pair of 1.7CDTi versions producing 110hp and 125hp respectively, and the range topping 2.0CDTi that gives out a torque filled 165hp for smooth acceleration. All engine variations will come with 16-valves and variable valve timing (VVT) technology to produce better fuel economy and mileage.

Those engines will then find a place under the bonnet of any of the nine model trims for the new Vauxhall Astra. The base models Expression and ES will start at a reasonably priced £12,995. The other trims and its expected starting prices are as follows: Exclusiv (£16,670), Excite (£17,435), SRi (£18,635), ES Tech (£19,035), SE (£20,100), SRi VX Line (£20,825), and the aptly named top of the line Elite (£21,125).

Since the Vauxhall Astra has a lot of competition in its class, it has been given a host of the usual standard goodies, and then some, of which are listed next. Some cabin amenities include aircon, radio CD player with MP3 and aux-in socket, electric front windows, seat height adjuster, electrically adjustable/heated door mirrors, adjustable steering column, steering wheel mounted audio controls (from mid-tier trims), mobile phone system with Bluetooth®, satellite navigation system with 7” colour monitor, USB connection with iPod control, among many others.

Safety equipments includes Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with ABS, driver/ front passenger/ curtain airbags, remote controlled alarm system with central locking, cruise control, rain-sensitive windscreen wipers, automatic lighting control, anti-dazzle rear-view mirror, to name a few. There is also the revolutionary Start/Stop System which comes standard with the 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX and the more powerful (165PS) 2.0CDTi 16v engines. If you want to tick the option box, go for the Sportive Pack comprising of unique front bumper, side sills, rear lower skirt, rear spoiler and body colour grille bar. You will discover that you can never go wrong in making the Vauxhall Astra hatchback sportier than it already looks.

Chrysler still on the fence about which brand will get next minivan

Monday, December 31st, 2012

2013 Chrysler Town and Country S - front three-quarter with city backdrop.

Chrysler has had at least two minivans since it started the family-friendly craze back in 1984, but we’ve known for some time that one of two not-so-mini vans (the Dodge Grand Caravan or Chrysler Town and Country) would not survive for a next generation. Last we heard, it was the Chrysler model that would be losing its sliding doors in place of a crossover design, but Chrysler execs have also said in the past that Chrysler would retain the minivan design and the Grand Caravan would become a CUV. Now, it seems like the automaker might be leaving this tough decision up to potential consumers, as the Detroit Free Press is reporting that the automaker is currently showing off a quartet of concepts – a minivan and crossover for both Chrysler and Dodge – to consumer clinics before making a final decision.

The report also says that whatever decision is made, the redesigned minivan and the all-new crossover will likely go on sale in 2014 for the 2015 model year. Combined, both minivans have accounted for almost 230,000 sales through November, putting the duo well ahead of rivals like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

Over the last couple of years, there has been plenty of chatter about the future Chrysler’s popular minivans including the return of all-wheel drive, the addition of a hybrid model and there was even the Chrysler 700C minivan concept vehicle at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, a surprise showcar that could inform the design of Chrysler’s next-generation people movers.

Honda yanks sheet off 2013 Crosstour, adds lower base price [w/video]

Monday, December 31st, 2012

2013 Honda Crosstour

The Honda Crosstour has been something of an automotive whatcha-ma-call-it. Buyers have found it hard to identify what the high-riding wagon is all about, and so have we. Honda even started out by calling it the Accord Crosstour, and then changed its name to help give it more of its own identity. But with other popular crossovers already in Honda’s stables, trying to carve out a niche for the Crosstour has been no easy task.

To help strengthen the identity of the crossover-wagon, Honda has updated the Crosstour with more “refined styling,” a number of content improvements and a lower base price. The first thing you will notice is the more utilitarian, “rugged” styling, with a pronounced front clip, fender flares and side skirts.

Under the hood lies one of Honda’s new Earth Dreams family of engines. The base 2.4-liter inline-four makes 192 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while returning 22 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway. The available 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower, up seven from the outgoing V6, making it the most powerful engine in the Earth Dreams family. The V6 returns 20/29 for front-wheel-drive models, and 18/28 for V6 models equipped with Real Time 4WD.

The Crosstour is also available with a suite of safety technologies, including a backup camera, forward collision warning and lane departure warning. A set of less-technical safety improvements have been applied as well, including reshaped headrests for improved visibility and an expanded view driver’s mirror.

The 2013 Honda Crosstour comes with a $27,230 base price – $525 less than the outgoing model – and goes on sale November 30, 2012. Only time will tell if these changes are effective enough to sway more buyers, but if you may be interested, check out the press release and video below.

Ford shows off 2014 Transit Connect Wagon, confirms cargo model for Detroit

Sunday, December 30th, 2012

2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon

On the heels of revealing the all-new 2014 Transit Connect Wagon this morning, Ford officials confirmed to Autoblog that its work-ready cargo counterpart will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Just like the Wagon, the cargo van will be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase variants and be able to handle payloads up to 1,200 pounds.

During an event held today at the company’s Product Review Center in Dearborn, Michigan, Ford’s marketing manager of commercial vehicles, Tim Stoehr, explained the strategy behind the new Transit Connect Wagon. Much like how we’ve seen consumers downsizing to smaller vehicles over the past few years, Ford firmly believes that buyers in the minivan segment are also looking to downsize. Thus, the Transit Connect Wagon is more of a true minivan than just about anything else on the market, and Ford believes the two-wheelbase strategy (with five- and seven-passenger configurations) will make its new van appealing to a wide range of consumers. That said, Stoehr expects the take rate on the two models to be about 80/20 – the majority going with the seven-passenger, long-wheelbase configuration.

The 2014 Transit Connect Wagon will be the least-expensive seven-passenger vehicle in the United States, coming in “thousands less than the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.”

Stoehr did not confirm pricing for either model, but said that the 2014 Transit Connect Wagon will be the least-expensive seven-passenger vehicle in the United States, coming in “thousands less than the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.” The Mazda5, which starts at $20,420 including delivery fees, only seats six.

Looking back to the introduction of Ford’s other new people-mover, the C-Max, the automaker was originally scheduled to launch a seven-passenger version, complete with sliding doors and traditional gas powertrains. When asked about why Ford decided to shift this sort of vehicle over to the Transit Connect line, Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s vice president of global engineering for global product development, told Autoblog that the decision was based on the fact that Ford wanted to have one nameplate in its US product portfolio solely dedicated to electrified vehicles. That, and the seven-passenger C-Max (better known as the Grand C-Max) didn’t offer nearly as much interior volume as the Transit Connect. To that end, Thai-Tang confirmed that a hybrid version of the Transit Connect is not on the table.

Ford also confirmed that, just like the current-generation Transit Connect, the new model will not be affected by the so-called “chicken tax” that applies to cargo vans built outside of the US. The 2014 Transit Connect will be built in Valencia, Spain.

When Ford launches the 2014 Transit Connect Wagon near the end of 2013, it will be available in the buyer’s choice of either a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder or a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four, both coming standard with six-speed automatic transmissions. The 2014 Transit Connect Wagon will officially bow at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.

Porsche Panamera wagon concept is real, looks better than five-door [UPDATE]

Sunday, December 30th, 2012

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept - rear three-quarter view

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept - front three-quarter viewWith the 2012 Paris Motor Show kicking off tomorrow, Porsche has already dropped what could be the biggest bombshell of the show with this Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept. Aside from giving the polarizing Panamera five-door hatchback much sexier lines, this long-rumored cargo-friendly concept obviously has the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake dead in its sights.

Judging by these leaked pictures, the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept is somewhat of a hodgepodge of current Porsche models, looking like a chopped Cayenne with headlights similar to those of the new Boxster and taillamps derived from the 911. While the rump of the current Panamera is, by far, the car’s most controversial design element, the Sport Turismo Concept puts that all to sleep finishing off this car with an exclamation point. This concept car probably also foretells a refreshed face that could be on the way for the three-year-old Panamera as well as an updated cabin that might actually do away with the overabundance of buttons in favor of some high-tech gadgetry.

We can’t help but daydream about a production Panamera Sport Turismo in Turbo form, but the Concept is propelled by a plug-in hybrid powertrain wearing the “e-Hybrid” designation. Details are scarce about this system, but it looks like it will add a trunk-mounted battery pack and a single drive motor to the rear axle of the rear-wheel-drive V6 Panamera.

We will definitely have more information and images for you in the next couple days, so stay tuned to learn (and see) more of this new exciting Porsche concept.

UPDATE: Porsche has released official details and more images of the Panamera Sport Turismo concept. Check out our gallery for what’s new and scroll below for the official press release from Porsche.

Honda recalling 871,000 SUVs and minivans over rollaway fear

Sunday, December 30th, 2012

Honda is recalling 871,000 SUVs and minivans for an issue in which the vehicles may roll away after the key has been removed form the ignition. 92 percent of the recalled vehicles, or 807,000 vehicles are in the US. According to a report from Reuters, the effected vehicles include certain numbers of the Honda Odyssey and Pilot, as well as the Acura MDX. Here are the recall figures:

  • 2003-2004 Honda Odyssey: 318,000 vehicles
  • 2003-2004 Honda Pilot: 259,000 vehicles
  • 2003-2005 Acura MDX: 230,000 vehicles
  • Additional Honda vehicles outside US: 64,000

The specific issue at the center of the recall pertains to the ignition interlock. A part of that system could become damaged or worn. As a result, the key could be removed, even if the car’s transmission is in drive or the vehicle is still on.

A probe was opened into the issue after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received 43 complaints, including several reported injuries. NHTSA found that the vehicles in these complaints rolled off, and some hit parked cars, fences, trees and mailboxes. One owner even reported a fractured fibula sustained while trying to stop an Odyssey that was rolling away. In February of 2013, Honda will commence the distribution of recall noticed to the vehicles in question.
